The Megatech Interceptor Jet, the Venom Island Hopper, or the Multiplex Easy Star can be a great present for a beginning pilot.  The Interceptor Jets are usually purchased for kids 8 and up and can be a first rc plane for them.  Move up to the Venom Island Hopper if you want a nice park flyer but still stay under $100. The Elapor foam Multiplex uses is a favorite among hobbyists for its durability and repairability, which helps make the Easy Star another good choice for novice pilots.  The Redcat Jetiger, Multiplex Funjet, and other EDF models are all fine planes for pilots with some experience on propeller trainers who want to get an rc jet.
